We have heard for some time that 5G will be supported by the entire iPhone 12 range, from 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini all the way up to the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max. But it seems now that the iPhone 12 is going to have a 5G advantage over all the best android devices.

This is according to Kang, who says that Apple has something called “Smart Data Mode” up its sleeve for the iPhone 12 on the Chinese social networking site Weibo.

“My understanding is that 4G/5G is allocated according to the application bandwidth,” Kang wrote. “Specific big data throughput applications use 5G, which is estimated to save power.”

In all the other words, it seems like the super-fast 5G service can only be used by the iPhone 12 where it is actually required, using 4G in places where time is not needed, such as with an app running in the background.

While those with unlimited data may sound a little temporarily altered, even for them it is sensible: 5 G needs more power than LTE. The iphone 12 Smart Data Mode of the iPhone 12 could also result in longer battery life, offering Apple an edge in power efficiency relative to recent Android rivals such as the Galaxy S20 FE, Pixel 5 and OnePlus 8T.

In addition to sub-6 GHz, Kang also suggests that all iPhone 12 models will support mmWave in the U.S. While sub-6GHz has a higher range, mmWave is far faster. Although a Sub-6 GHz 5 G phone would still be considerably faster than a 4 G LTE smartphone, as a mmWave phone would theoretically do, it is not capable of uploading an entire Netflix TV series in seconds.

In just a few short weeks, we’ll know for certain. Tuesday (1 p.m EDT/10 a.m. PDT) is scheduled for the iPhone 12 case. The A14 Bionic chip will be used by all four handsets, which, going to judge from leaked iPad Air metrics, actually has become very powerful.

There will be a dual-camera configuration for the cheaper 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini and 6.1-inch iPhone 12, while the 6.1-inch Pro and 6.7-inch Pro Max models will have three lenses plus a LiDAR sensor. There are conflicting reports as to whether the latter two will upgrade to a 120Hz display, but it seems likely to be a feature of the iPhone 13 at the moment.
